Ryan, holding a broom on the porch, "I think there's dirt up ahead."
---------------
Zach, downstairs, whines, "Ryan! Stop it!" pause "Grrr."
Ryan, crying, comes up to me, "He took the stick."
Mommy, "He took what stick?"
Ryan, "The brown one."
Mommy, trying to figure out what he is talking about, "What is the stick used for?"
Ryan, "The stick is used for not hitting Zachary."

RE: Christina's comment about Ryan pictures on the last post
Ryan has not wanted his pictures taken lately. When I get the camera out he starts saying "No. I'm not gonna smile!" and runs away. You'd think I tortured him with endless photo sessions his whole childhood or something ;-)
Here are a couple of pictures of Ryan playing our latest game. I like to call it 'Chase Ryan with a camera to get pictures of him laughing histerically and darting away' Maybe that's too long a title?

I Can Do It!
It appears my fiercely independent son, who has known how to use the potty for over a year, was waiting to be able to do it all (except clean up) himself before he really got serious about using the potty. He has been doing a great job. He even wore underwear for his nap yesterday and stayed dry. Mommy is so proud!

Bittersweet
My baby is growing up. This week I put almost all Lily's 3 month outfits with the outgrown kids' clothes, but I am still desperately holding out on some of the cutest outfits. I love that she is doing new things all the time. The smiles give me warm fuzzies all over and I'm so proud when she lifts her head or rolls on to her side. I just don't want to give up her newborn-ness. She is such a sweet little baby. Who knew watching your kids grow up could be so hard?!
All Dry
Today was a landmark day in the Periwinkle household. It was the first day Ryan wore underwear all day and didn't have one accident. Not even a little! Woohoo, go Ryan!!! The best part is he told me every time he had to go and he did it almost all by himself. It was a little nerve wracking when he told me he didn't have to go every time I asked, but he was able to tell me when he did need to go.
The Boy Cracks Me Up
Ryan's conversation with a sippy cup that fell off the table(he gets that from his father):
"That was not a good idea!" [He gets down from his chair to get it]
His voice softens, " I love you, but that was not okay."
The sippy cup had nothing to say for itself.

A Fox?!
I just saw a fox run through our yard while we were outside playing. Um, aren't foxes supposed to be nocturnal?
NOTE: I just looked up "fox." I was right, the fox is indeed nocturnal. I wonder why it was in our yard mid-morning...
Ah, seek and ye shall find. This article says foxes move about during the day, especially when it is overcast. Indeed it is.
Bet you didn't think you were going to get a biology lesson this morning ;-)

Overheard from Our Bathroom
Mommy, Lily and Ryan in the bathroom waiting for Ryan to finish on the potty...
Mommy: Hello sweet Lily-put (one of my nicknames for Lily- I also call her Lily-pution sometimes)
Ryan: I'm Ryan-put. She is Lily-put and I am Ryan-put. Okay, mommy? Okay!
*I don't think he gets the reference;-)
-------------
::Grunt, shuffle, shuffle::
Mommy: Ryan stay on the potty until you are all done.
::Grunt, shuffle, shuffle::
Mommy: Are you all done?
Ryan: No
Mommy: SIT on the potty until you are done.
::Grunt, shuffle, shuffle::
Mommy: Ryan we are not playing ring around the potty! We are using the potty.
::Grunt, shuffle, shuffle::
Mommy: Ryan you don't need to look every time...wait until you are finished to look.(I know, gross, but what are you gonna do? He's 2.)
------------------
Mommy: Let's brush your teeth.
Ryan: Okay.
Mommy: Do you want your Piglet toothbrush or the Tigger one?
Ryan:Piglet [with a look that I can only describe as a mix of disgust and pity] Tigger knocks all the people.
*It's so funny to see how his personality plays out. He's so naturally empathetic. He feels bad for the "people" that Tigger knocks down when he bounces on them, but he also seems to feel bad about thinking Tigger did something mean. Interesting. I can totally relate.

I Dumped a Load
Ryan has been taking a long time to use the potty lately. I mean he will sit there for 30 minutes or more talking, playing and whatever else if I let him. Usually I sit in there with him and if Lily is awake she sits in the bouncy seat with us. I'm starting to think he is taking so long because he likes the attention. Considering all things(including the possibility of a mess) I hesitantly decided I would start leaving him in there alone after about 5 minutes. Since I have a mountain of laundry to do today I decided to start a load quickly while he was in there. I told him where I would be and headed downstairs. About a minute later he comes down the stairs holding the "shield" part of the potty telling me that it came apart. I asked him if he did a poopy and he said yes. I checked...He did. I walked his little pants-less self back upstairs to "clean up". As we are walking through the living room he says, "I dumped a load, mommy!" Realizing he is talking about the pile of small toys he had dumped from the back of his truck, but finding the humor in the irony of the statement I dryly said, "Yes. Yes, you did."
Maybe I should stop teasing the hubs about his middle school sense of humor ;-)

He Never Ceases to Amaze Me
Remember how I was going to weigh Ryan yesterday? Well, we did it. I asked him to get on the scale. We waited for the numbers to come up. Ryan stepped off the scale saying 28[head shaking in amazement, Wha?!]. He read the number 28? Whoa. Unfortunately our scale doesn't always give the right read out the first time. The way I figure it(after another couple times on the scale) he is probably closer to 29 or 30 pounds.
Today when I put him down for his nap we did the usual songs in the rocking chair. Then a prayer in bed. I get up to walk out and say, "Love you. Sleep well. See you in the morning." I guess I slipped into bedtime mode instead of nap mode. He looked at me with his face all scrunched up and said, "That doesn't make sense." Sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself and sometimes your toddler helps you. ;-)

2 Month Appointment
Lily had her 2 month appointment yesterday. She weighed in at a healthy 12 lbs 2 oz. That's the 90th percentile for those who keep track. She is 22 inches long, that's closer to the 50th percentile. It's funny, but she doesn't look chubby to me. She is on the same track Ryan took- 90th percentile for weight and just above the 50th for height(at least for the first few months). At about month 6 Ryan dropped to the 75th percentile for weight and stayed around the 50th for height. I think he is 50 and 50 now. Maybe I'll weight him today and see.
Everything else about Lily's development checked out well. She even lifted her head 90 degrees, cooed and smiled for the doctor(or at least in the doctor's presence).
It's time to get ready for gy'nastics now.

On Nursing
Can anyone else tell which side they fed their baby on last by which side of their seat the laptop is on? or is that just me?
