Memories to be Tucked Away

  • Today while Ryan was doing his homework Lily was playing pretend with Little People. He looked over at her and with a tilt of his head and the sweetest smile on his face said, "I love the way Lily plays."
  • Lily came up to me and asked, "Mommy, how do Nemos kiss again?" I gave her a puzzled look and then as she stuck her little nose out as me and shook her little head back and forth I realized she meant Eskimo kisses. So I told her the proper term and she said, "Oh, okay." Pause "You be a Nemo and I'll be a Nemo and we'll do a kiss." LOL
  • We went to pick out some gifts to send to a little girl in Kenya. Lily helped me pick out some hair things. She picked these beaded pony tail holders and some heart barrettes. I was good with the barrettes, but I tried to steer her away from the pony tail holders. They were just a little much in my opinion, but Lily really liked them. She held them in her hand and said in a kind of dreamy voice, "They are so pretty. They are like jewelry." I figured if she loves them that much Brenda might just like them, too.

Letter to Santa

Lily decided that she wanted to write a letter to Santa. [She's asking to put cookies out for Santa, too. I think she's getting these ideas from preschool because it's not something we talk about here. It's okay though when she asks we will tell her the truth just like we did with Ryan.] I was cooking dinner when she asked me to help her, so I asked Ryan if he would help her. He was sweet and helped his sister. He even helped her find an envelope and fold the paper so it would fit inside. She wanted to send her letter so badly. She wasn't sure how it would work...she had some Winnie the Pooh type ideas about the letter being carried to Santa by the wind. I convinced her that we should mail it and let the mailman take it. We missed the mailman the first day. I just didn't have the heart to keep putting her off, so I let her put it in the mailbox this morning before church. She was so excited she skipped to the mailbox giggling all the way. Quite possibly the cutest thing I've seen in months. She had a sparkly pink Santa hat on when she did it which just added to the cuteness. Such sweet memories! I love that girl!

The Restaurant

Ryan and Lily are playing pretend this morning. They are cracking me up. Some things from the game that made me laugh:

They came to me and told me they wanted to order breakfast. I told them pancakes are $100. Ryan said, "No, they are $.25 because that's all Lily has."

"Mom, you know you don't get to keep the money forever, right?"

"Mom, are the pancakes ready yet? I'm going to pretend your name is Mom in the game, so I can call you by your real name, okay?"

Ryan to Lily, "This is a slow food restaurant, so we can sit and talk until our food is ready."  A slow food restaurant, that just cracks me up.

I love when they play nicely together:-)

Saving Electricity

When the sun is out I like to use the natural light as much as I can. I love natural light and it doesn't hurt the electric bill if you know what I'm sayin'. When I went up to make dinner the family room was aglow with natural light. Of course the sun is setting quite early these days and during dinner I had to turn on a light to see. So imagine my surprise when I come downstairs to the family room and find Ryan in a very dark room reading. "Why are you trying to read in the dark?!" I asked. I suppose a stupid question deserves a stupid answer because Ryan very nonchalantly responded, "Because I can."

Learning Curve

I went to say good night to Ryan. This is a time when he often asks very profound questions. Sometimes I wonder if it's because he is trying to get me into a conversation that will last a long time so he can stay up late. Sometimes I think it's just because he thinks about these things when he is by himself.

Tonight's question was not so profound. "Mommy, do you know how to write a cursive D?"
"Yes."
"Will you teach me?"
"Sure, but not right this minute."
"Good. I want to be able to write [my last name] in cursive. I know how to do the scribble after."

If you've seen my signature you probably got a good giggle out of that one;-)

Lego Boy

There is almost always a pile of Legos in our family room. Ryan LOVES them, especially the Star Wars ones. I'm usually pretty impressed when he builds one of those ships. There are a lot of directions and it takes a lot of focus to finish the big ones. He recently bought the Battle of Endor kit with some birthday money and some money he had saved up. It took him 3 consecutive days of working after school to build all the parts. He had so much fun doing it. I don't think I got pictures of it because it "got destroyed" before I had a chance. It was really cool though.
This morning he showed me this...
I'm sure he knows much more about it than I do, but it's the ship Boba Fett uses in the second movie. The thing is, he never got a kit to make it. He did it all on his own, from memory. And I thought I was impressed when he built ships with directions! I'm sure Star Wars purists will have all kinds of things to say about it's inaccuracy, but I think it's pretty impressive.

Little Girl Dolls Make the Difference

Lily and I went to the store together. We were walking by the little girl clothes and Lily feel in love with a dress. It was purple (of course) with a bow on the front and a matching dress for a doll. It was 40% off and I had a gift card so I bought it for her. She was tickled pink. Then I realized all her dolls are babies. Little bald babies. She put the dress on one of her baby dolls happily enough and played with it for a while. Then I remembered something.
I spent the evening digging through boxes and eventually found my old dolls. There are two that I had that were close to the 18" size that is so popular right now, My Friend Jenny and My Friend Becky. So we gave them baths and washed their clothes and Lily has barely put them down since. She takes them everywhere. Jenny stays the closest, but mostly it's both of them. It's so sweet. She's played with dolls before, but this is something else. She absolutely loves them. They are a little skinny for the dress matches her new dress, but she doesn't seem to mind at all (she's a little skinny for most of her clothes, too!) She mostly has them in the outfits they had on from when I was a kid.
The other day I noticed her dolls didn't have shoes on. I thought it was just like her other baby dolls- sometimes they just don't have anything on and it's no big deal. Then we went to leave the house and of course the dolls had to come with us. She grabbed her dolls and ran to her cubby to put her shoes on and I saw this...

Isn't that just the sweetest thing you've ever seen? I didn't make a big deal (I took the picture later when she wasn't around). I just waited to see what happened. When we came back she took off her shoes and took off the doll shoes and lined them all up again. She's melting my heart, that girl! I think she may be ready for her own big girl doll soon! It's a big moment. I'd better start saving now! I wonder if I should let her decide which big girl doll to pick or just pick one I love. My favorite was Samantha and she's not available anymore. Maybe Lily and I can pick out a new favorite together. This calls for a trip to the library.

Pants Weather

The battleground has been set. It's fall and the weather is cooling off, but my son doesn't seem to think so. Early this week it was pretty cold. I am admittedly a cold wimp, so I had my coat on and I was feeling comfortable. Ryan, however, insists he will be warm in shorts. Every day I walk to the bus stop with a sweatshirt in hand and try to convince him he wants to wear it. One day he even put it on before we left the house! He had goosebumps on his legs that day because he wore shorts and it was freezing. I told him the next day he needed to wear pants. He agreed as he stood there covered in goosebumps at the bus stop. Just for the record I told him he could go home and change and I would drive him to school. He wanted to ride the bus. So I told him I would bring pants to his school. He said no, it would be embarrassing. I brought them anyway. He didn't change.

So the next morning when he got up I reminded him that he should wear pants that day. I left to go make his lunch. When I walked by his room this is what I saw...

I thought it was pretty hilarious, so I took these pictures. Then I made him really put the pants on. I wasn't really paying attention to the fact that his broken dresser drawer was sitting in the background overflowing. I really need to send in the paperwork to get that fixed. Sometimes it's the moments that matter, not the surroundings.

A Season for Everything

It seems summer will be ending soon whether I like it or not. I like summer. Sure it's hot, but with a god mix of a/c, sprinklers and pools it can be really fun. What I love most is the freedom of summer. I'm not on anyone else's schedule. Ryan is great at getting himself up and ready for whatever the day has in store and Lily has been sleeping until 9:30 some days. So I have been able to sleep in which is heavenly for me. Summer has been great.

Fall will bring a new season in my life in more ways than one. Of course it will cool off and the leaves will turn many beautiful colors. This fall will also mark a new season in motherhood for me. Lily will start preschool which means I will have regular and scheduled time alone. This is both exciting and hard for me. It will be hard to send my babies off to 3rd grade and preschool, but I'm excited to have time to do things like get groceries and run errands alone. It's the little things really;-)

I'm hoping to use my time so well that I'm able to do projects that have been waiting years for me. Maybe I'll get those scrapbooks I've been wanting to do done or reorganize the spare room so it's useful again. Maybe I'll even be able to keep my house clean enough to have visitors more often! Okay, so that's a pipe dream;-) If I can at least keep it clean enough so I don't feel guilty doing other projects that would be a major win for me. I have a list a mile long of things I want to do. I need to figure out a way to break it down so I don't feel overwhelmed and end up doing nothing.

And now I will leave you with these famous words adapted from Ecclesiastes 3...

"To everything
turn, turn,turn
there is a season
turn, turn, turn
and a time for every purpose under heaven." -The Byrds

Now it can be stuck in your head like it is in mine:-)

Time Out

My child cracks me up sometimes. I was at the table eating and I heard him stomping up the steps. "What's wrong?" I asked.
"I'm giving myself a time out."
"What happened?"
"I'll tell you later. I can't talk right now. I'm in time out."

Laptopless

It's not as sexy as it sounds---get it? lap top*less;-) Yeah, you're right, it's not that funny. Jay has my laptop again. He had it all last week because he was on a trip with the middle school ministry at church. He was supposed to be off work, but he had to log in and work a couple hours each day because his co-worker was sick. It's a good reason and I'm glad he was able to work it out and still go on his trip because it was a great trip for him.

Still, I really don't like not having my laptop. I don't know how people sit at desks all day. It's bad enough that I have to do all my photo editing at the desk, but now I have to do all my web surfing and e-mailing here, too. Blah. Plus I have a project where I have to transfer a bunch of information to a spread sheet. I actually may end up doing that on the desktop since it has 2 screens and that makes it easier to see the information I'm transferring, but I started it and got about 1/10th of the way through and had to stop for a while. I took a break from the desk and now here I am blogging from the desk...I guess that's not very responsible of me, huh? Well, I do have until September to do the project, so I think it will be okay;-)

So yeah, like I said, Jay has my laptop again because he is on his way to Michigan for a funeral and his co-worker is due to have a baby any day (like several people I know). Jay wants to be prepared to work just in case. Another really good reason. I'm really glad he is being so responsible and prepared, but I miss my laptop.

You may play the violins for me now. LOL

Woohoo, We Got Out of the House!

I have not been out of the house since Sunday and Lily has been cooped up since Friday. We like being home, but there is something about not being able to go out that makes a person a little stir crazy. So first thing this morning (for Lily at least- she didn't wake up until 10) we counted $3 out of the change jar for each kid and I took them to a surprise destination. Ryan came up with all kinds of guesses as to where we were going, so many I feared he was going to be disappointed with our destination. I was really only planning on taking them to 5 Below. I figured in a store full of stuff for less than $5 they were bound to find something that would be exciting for them. I'm glad I counted out the money before we left because I was tempted to give the each a few more dollars a couple times. Lily was so excited about so many things and Ryan really liked some of the $5 items. I did tell Ryan he could use a couple of his own dollars if he wanted something bigger. He is such a miser though, he wouldn't part with his money. As  matter of fact when we counted out the money this morning he asked me if they had to spend it. I told him he did. What kind of kid doesn't want to spend free money?! My kind I guess. He gets it from me. After all I'm the girl who didn't apply to Hopkins because it had a $50 application fee and I might not even get in. Ugh, I know. I realize now how silly it was. I really want to teach Ryan about value and using his money for things he values instead of squirreling it all away for no particular reason. It's funny the things you think about when you're a parent.
We went through the whole store. Lily found a necklace and bracelet pretty early on and though she saw some other things she liked nothing topped the necklace and bracelet. Ryan took a little longer to decide, that might have something to do with the extreme girlie-ness(is that a word?) of the first area we explored. He eventually found a soft, Nerf type sword that he could use to fight his brother since he has a similar one that came with his Playmobile knight set. Yep, that seems about right, dress up girlie stuff for Lily and weapons for Ryan. I was a little surprised he didn't want a USA soccer ball, but he does already have like 3 soccer balls and I'm sure he'll get another one when the fall season starts. All in all a successful outing.

update?

Why am I so bad at keeping my blog up to date? Maybe it's because I have too many blogs. Maybe it's because I don't have anything to say. Maybe it's because I don't make the time. Maybe it's because I spend too much time on the computer already. Maybe it's because Facebook requires less thought. Maybe. Yep, that's it- all of that.

We've had a good summer. The kids have been great at entertaining themselves when we're home and we've had enough stuff to do outside the house to keep a nice balance. It's a nice balance for me anyway. I like to keep the scales tipped a little more toward being home than some people. I like our house. It's comfortable. On a side note, our neighbors had a baby boy last week. His name is Ryan :-)

I'm really enjoying the summer pace. The kids sleep in, I sleep in. We go places if we want to, we stay home if we want to. It's good. I really liked our vacation a couple weeks ago when Jay got to join in our summer days. I really like that the vacation house was on the bay situated in such a way that I could get sunset silhouettes near the water. The kids really enjoyed the pool at the house. Ryan's swimming lessons really paid off. He was all over the pool. He's really excited to start camp next week. I suppose it's time for some structure to re-enter our lives. Luckily camp doesn't start until 10, so we still get to sleep in. I may end up having to wake Lily up though as she is still asleep right now and it's about the time we'd have to leave.
I'm really excited for Ryan. I think he's going to really enjoy camp.

Let's see, what else has been going on? We've made some decisions and our fall plans are not so up in the air anymore. That means I get to keep doing some activities at church that I wasn't sure about at the beginning of summer. That brings a lot of peace of mind.

I've had just about the right number of photography clients. Enough to keep me busy and bring in a bit of spending money, but not so many that I'm feeling like I've shorted my kids.

My garden is doing fairly well. I think I over planted it though. Next time I might just have to plant the vine plants in a different spot with a bigger, sturdier trellis.

I probably should have bulleted this post, but I wasn't really planning it that way. It just sort of happened. Consider it stream of consciousness.

That's My Lily

Lily with a hand full of CheezIts says, "Can I have these?"
I say, "Yes."
She starts to run off and I call after her, "But you may not run around the house with them."
Sounding disappointed she says, "I know."
Then with a glint in her eye (as she galloped across the room looking over her shoulder at me) she says, "Can I gallop?"

Best of Both Worlds

We've been going to this really great church that we love. Lots of other people seem to love it, too because it's been growing, growing, growing for years now. Thousands of people every Sunday and that's great. We feel pretty firmly grounded in the church because we know enough people to see people we know often, though with that many people it's not always easy. There are lots of programs and events we are able to have because we have so many members. On the other hand there are lots of things we just can't do any more because there are too many people. Recently some of us broke off to go to a satellite campus. The purpose of the campus is to reach new people who are not close enough to our main campus to want to go "all that way" to try church. The fringe benefit for those of us who attend the campus is that we are small enough to do some of those things the main campus is too big to do now.

Today we had a church picnic at the local playground. It was great. We sat under the pavilion and ate lunch, played on the playground and had a water balloon toss. It was fun to hang out with new friends.  It seemed like the whole campus was there. It happened to be a very hot day, so we only stayed for a couple hours, but it was great while it lasted. I should have taken pictures, but sometimes it's better to just be fully in the moment with everyone else. So you'll just have to imagine a bunch of cool families hanging out together at a really cool playground;-)

History

So I'm watching this series called "America, the Story of Us" and it's really interesting. I think if history had had this much life in school I might have liked it better and might even know some of it. Maybe this is more of a Facebook post than a blog post.

Blog Post in My Head...Disappeared

I keep thinking of blog posts in my head when I'm no where near my computer and when I sit down I can't think of any of them. :-(  One more case of Mommy Brain.

Busy Day(s)

I think the reason I'm most looking forward to summer is the slow pace. Yesterday I got up, got Ryan off to school, got Lily loaded up and headed to the church to pick up some supplies. I had a Bible Study meeting at 9:30 and a church play date at the playground at 11:30. The supplies mentioned earlier were for the play date. I was in charge of the craft. After the playground we came home and I logged on to a live webcast about homeschooling. During a lull in the action I grabbed some lunch for myself and Lily. The webcast ended and less than 5 minutes later Ryan got home. I gave him some advice on his animal project and he worked on it for a little while. It was around this time that I realized I was hosting play group the next morning. Cleaning supplies, here I come. Luckily I knew I was going to have to meet Jay to drop his car off for some work, so I had planned on going out to eat. Our one night out this month came pretty early, but I'm so glad for it. We ate at Buffalo Wild Wings. When we got home it was kid bed time/ adult cleaning time. A quick run tot he store for coffee, tea and snacks for the morning and then it was adult bedtime. It was a looooong day, but full of good stuff.

I was glad to have playgroup at my house this morning because it meant we had something to do for half of my car-less day. It was good to see some old friends even if I didn't get a chance to chat for long because I was too busy playing hostess. I always got on my grandmother for spending all her time in the kitchen during events. Now I understand. Maybe I'll get better at hosting as I go along. I should work on that. This afternoon I've been working on some projects and catching up on e-mails. in a few minutes I'll start dinner. Somehow we will pick up Jay's car and tonight I am going to relax.

Tomorrow will be better. I just got the picture I've been waiting for, so I'll finish a gift project I'm dong for a friend and maybe run it out to him. Ryan had gymnastics in the afternoon and we need to finish his animal project because it's going to be another busy weekend. Okay, maybe tomorrow won't be any better, ugh!

It's not so much that I'm dreading all these things. They are all great things. It's just the constant "go"ing that I don't like so much. I love spring and all the wonderful activities it brings, but I'm glad for the different seasons and that summer is a season of rest.

On Gardening

I like flowers. I've always liked flowers and always wanted to have them around. What I didn't like was the idea of gardening. Gardening meant weeding and caring for plants. It meant more work. Blah!
When we built our porch I decided we needed some gardens to make it a cozy, happy place to spend time. I planted some Gerbera Daisies, some Day Lilies, a Stargazer Lily and a bushy plant that looked like daises, but I think it was called something else. It was awesome, but it was work. Last year I decided that I liked having the flowers enough to try to grow some food. My strawberries and peppers didn't work out super well, but my basil was awesome.
Since my food venture didn't work out as well as I hoped I was nervous about having a vegetable garden, but knew I really wanted to do it. I took this free class at the library called "Grow It; Eat It." It was a good basic class and gave me the confidence to make my own garden. I also learned that you are not supposed to hardest strawberries the first year, so that made me feel better about last year's efforts. My budget was not super big this year, so I wasn't sure I'd be able to do flowers, but Jay found this deal where he got 100 bulbs for $10. I planted them in late spring and the first bud is showing today. For my veggie garden I had to build up a level spot in our back yard since that is our Southern side, but it's all hill. Luckily I was able to use stuff I had around the yard to build most of it. I even had bags of soil left over from another project. As if I weren't blessed enough already a friend offered me a bunch of seeds- for free! She had extra. Then a new friend and fellow first time gardener brought two of her lettuce plants to church for me a few weeks ago. What a beautiful surprise! The seeds have started growing and I have this beautiful garden that will eventually provide food for my family. I can hardly believe how God is providing for me in this time. It's amazing.
Bear with me for a minute while I try to explain something else that may not seem related at first. Through another kindness of the Lord I was able to go on our church's women's retreat this year. The main theme was spending time with God. It happens to go right along with the Discipleship course I'm doing right now, but that's a bit off topic. During the retreat one of the speakers talked about spending time with God just listening. She talked about how sitting quietly works well for her, but one of her friends finds she is better able to listen when her body is moving in a way she doesn't have to think about- like riding a bike on a trail. As I was pulling weeds a few weeks ago this strange thing happened- it all made sense. I was doing a pretty mindless task surrounded by all this beauty of God's creation and I felt this great peace. When I sit quietly in my house I rarely feel peace. I'm constantly thinking about all the things(read: housework) I should be doing or the kids' noises distract me. Outside the noises of the kids playing on the play set or running around the yard just fit into the tranquil outdoor atmosphere. I'm able to enjoy my gardening even more as I enjoy quiet (if not quiet, at least peaceful) time with God. Soon we will be enjoying the pesticide free bounty He has provided for us and I'm so excited about all of it. This year I'm actually starting to enjoy the *whole* gardening experience.

This Stupid Economy is Ruining My Complexion

The economy is ruining my complexion and it doesn't have anything to do with worry or stress (though I'm not saying I don't have those). I am breaking out like a teenager. Before the economy tanked I was going along happily using products that worked well for my skin. Things were good and I was happy with my routine. Then the downfall started.
First my favorite make up line went bust. No longer do I have a light non-greasy feeling foundation option. Supposedly they might be able to keep an online thing going, but they have not brought back the products I really use like foundation and powder. I'm still using the bottle I got before they stopped selling them and I plan on getting every drop I can out of it. I've been using this stuff for 9 years and I have never liked anything as much. Grrrrr...so annoying.
As if that wasn't enough my moisturizer has been discontinued as well. I wrote to the company asking why I can't find it anymore and they said they have had to re-work their product lines to concentrate on their most popular products. This is no small company either. I won't mention it by name because this isn't really about the company, but more about the fact that my skin is suffering a great deal and I'm not happy. I don't know about your skin, but my skin likes certain products and it was doing really well while I used this moisturizer. I've tried lots of moisturizers and "skin systems" from really expensive ones to ones you get at the grocery store. I was really happy with this one and now it's gone. I thought the one I'm using now would work well because I like their  facial cleansers, but no such luck. I'm waiting for the supposed "adjustment period" to be over, but looking like I'm a hormonal wreck is starting to make me feel like a hormonal wreck. Gah! No wonder being a teenager is so hard. At least this time around I've got a husband who loves me no matter how much my skin turns on me.
I would also like to note how unfair it is that I have to deal with pimples and wrinkles at the same time. STINK!

**disclaimer- I am complaining a lot, I know. I am also aware of the people who suffer way more than I do with chronic or life threatening illnesses. I am simply venting my frustration and do not mean to discount my numerous blessings. So, if you were thinking you'd admonish me for feeling bad for myself when there is so much suffering in the world there is no need....really.**

Friday Photo

It's been a while since I posted a picture, I thought I'd share these from Easter.

By this time it's afternoon and the kids have changed into play clothes, played "Dams" with Uncle Ben and gotten pretty dirty. You can see it if you look at their hands. Dams is a game Uncle Ben made up where they start the hose in the gutter and build dams to try to contain the water. After this they went out to the back yard where they climbed much taller trees and crossed Uncle Ben's tightrope. Lily didn't actually cross though she would have if the grown ups didn't decide it wasn't the best idea since she couldn't reach the upper "handrail" ropes very well.

I have more, but I need to go make dinner. To be continued...

Gardening

I signed up for a gardening class at the library. It's called "Grow It; Eat it." I'm pretty excited about the class. I want to grow my own veggies, but I'm a little unsure about some things. I tried to grow somethings last year. I got basil, green pepper and strawberry plants. The basil did great and provided lots of great usable leaves that were so yummy. The strawberries seemed to be doing well for a while, but then the berries either got half eaten or rotted out I'm not 100% sure. We got like 2 small strawberries to eat out of the entire crop. The green peppers didn't fair much better. I have a feeling it was because I did those both in pots instead of directly in the ground like the basil. Hopefully I'll learn a lot in class and be able to get a better crop this year. Is it called a crop when it's just a few plants in your back yard?

Thinking Out Loud (well, at least in type)

Those who have been around me lately may or may not know, but I'm thinking about homeschooling our kids. Ryan is completely bored in school and he is there (including the bus ride) 6 1/2 hours a day. That may not seem like a lot to some people, but when you think of the time left over that's not taken up with dinner, bedtime routines and homework it's not much and of course the morning is just getting ready for school. The boy wants to learn. He's not bored because all they do is work. He bored because he doesn't feel like he is learning anything. I don't blame him, a lot of the work he brings home is far too simple. I worry though. I worry that he won't learn the right things if he is home taught. I worry that I won't be able to teach him music because I don't even know how to read music. I worry that he will become what Jay calls "one of those pod people" that don't seem to quite fit in to what we think of as normal society. I worry that I might go crazy being home with both kids all day long every day for the foreseeable future. I worry that I might start with good intentions and then want to give up when it gets hard.
Then I talk to my homeschooling friends and I look at their kids and I think it might work. I was at a meeting last night for Sunday school and as we were leaving I saw my friend, Deb, who has been a great example for me of home-school life. I went over to say hi and she told me she was going to invite me out with them that night- She was with some of her home-schooing friends. They invited me to sit down and we talked about homeschooling and lots of other stuff. It was great to talk about my fears and hear some of their stories. It's funny how God keeps pointing my way. Just this school year I've met 3 moms(not including the ones from last night) who have given me all kinds of great information and encouragement about this. And last night during my meeting one of the ladies shared that she teaches a home school Bible study for kids that they go to while the moms go to their own Bible study. How great is that? I didn't even know that existed. Then one of the other coaches said that his wife home-schools their kids. I've been learning all about the social activities, co-ops, group field trips, weekday play dates, etc. that offer great opportunities for socialization. A friend gave me a book written by a lady who didn't finish high school until her last home-schooled child did. All of her children went to college and are doing well in their chosen fields. I've been reading the blog of a really amazing photographer, Jasmine Star, who was home schooled. She has the most amazing stories and she is really cool. Oh, by the way, she went to law school, but decided law was not what she wanted to do. So she became an international wedding photographer instead. When I started reading her blog the home-school stuff was just a side note to me. I wasn't thinking about home-school then and her talking about homeschooling didn't make me want to home-school my kids, but seeing a good product of homeschooling makes me happy now that I am thinking about it.
So I've written about my fears and other people's successes and even all the nudges and arrangements God has made toward homeschooling, but what I haven't really talked about is why I want to do it. I don't think the public education system is failing my kids exactly, but I do feel like they could be learning so much more. Well, at this point I'm really only talking about my experience with Ryan and what I expect will happen with Lily since she is not in the public system yet. I can cater their learning to their needs. I feel like Ryan's love of learning is getting squelched in the system that says every child needs to be up to this level by that time. So all the focus seems to be on kids who need more help. I understand with limited budgets that they need to make choices about where they put their resources, but meanwhile some kids are sitting in class bored out of their minds because they've known how to do this stuff for 2 years. I keep hearing "as they get older there will be more separation in classes and he will be with kids with similar abilities." Well, I'm tired of waiting for that to happen and he is, too. If we kill his love of learning in these "in between" years what good is it to be with those kids in however many years? He needs to form good study habits now or he will never think he has to work to learn anything. Believe me, this will cost him dearly when he is older. In getting to choose our curriculum I will get to explore their loves and interests with them. We can go in depth about things they are really interested in instead of glossing over a bunch of stuff they won't retain because it was just a small bit they learned. I have so many ideas about studying how things work together. Studying each state, one at a time, but in groups (i.e. Northeastern states) during a block of time. So they can relate where they are on the map, etc. We can learn about so many things by doing them instead of reading about them. Composting is a great example, or growing plants from seeds(yes, I know they do this one in school). The opportunities are endless. I love that about homeschooling.
Another big issue for me is scheduling. I believe our kids today are way over-scheduled. I understand why parents want their children to experience many different activities, but I really believe they need free time, too. With them being at school for so many hours five days a week it seems like too much to schedule more than one or two activities/sports. With homeschooling I can build those growing opportunities into our curriculum. Piano lessons and dance classes for music; soccer, gymnastics, baseball, etc for P.E.; pottery classes for art; the list goes on and on. I'm also a firm believer in family dinners. Doing these activities during the day would allow us to still be able to come together for a meal every night.
Perks that are not good reasons to home-school, but I will really enjoy- awesome! Being on our own schedule. That means we can sleep later if we want, we can take vacations in the middle of the school year means smaller crowds plus we save money for it being the off-season and we can start our lessons when we are ready. Less wasted time waiting for everyone to be done, walking quietly from place to place and riding the bus for half an hour to get somewhere 5 minutes away means that we will probably not spend 6 hours on school a day= more play time. Picnic lunches together when it's nice outside. I get to choose the school supplies. More family time. I can see the interactions my kids are having with other children and act accordingly. For example if the get along really well with some kids we can make play dates, but if someone is a trouble maker I won't make my child sit next to them while they are trying to learn if they don't want to. We can learn about whatever we want with no time limits. If Ryan wants to spend 4 hours in making a craft, as he has been prone to do lately, he can because we have lots of time in our day.

Imagination

I love when my kids speak encouraging words to one another, so yesterday when I heard Lily encouraging Ryan with, "Don't give up, Ryan. You can do it!" It was music to my ears. Knowing he was playing a princess Wii game with her because she loves it, but can't really play by herself made it even better. He had asked to play Wii and I told him he could play whatever he wanted. When Lily saw him getting ready to play she asked him to play princesses with her. After making checking with me to make sure he'd still get a chance to play the game he wanted he gladly obliged. I love when they play nicely with each other and do kind things for one another.

Of course all the wonderfulness only lasted for so long and they started getting frustrated with one another because Lily couldn't get past a particular obstacle. I helped with that one and everything went okay for a while longer. Then came another one and I couldn't keep helping, so I told Lily it was time to stop playing for now and let Ryan play his game. She didn't like that, so she went up to her room and cried. Ryan went up after her and the next thing I heard was Ryan running around saying, "I'm a green bog!" and Lily laughing and giggling as she chased him with her princess wand. They were playing the Wii game in real life. I was so impressed with Ryan in so many ways. He went on his own to cheer his sister up. He used great problem solving skills and used his imagination to come up with just the right thing to make his sister happy again. They spent the rest of the afternoon playing their own versions of Wii games in real life. They played Excite Truck, Mario and Sonic Winter Olympics and Mario Kart after they were done playing princesses. These kinds of afternoons warm my heart.

Our New Toilet

It's about 10PM... I hear Crash! Boom! Bang! I recognize the sound as the stool in the upstairs bathroom. It sounds horrible. I run upstairs. "Are you okay?!" I ask before I can even see what's going on. No response. I get to the top of the stairs and flip the light on because the bathroom was completely dark. And that's when I saw it. Unfortunately, Ryan did not see it, at least not the way I did. He was standing there holding the the upside down wooden stool at a 45* angle in one hand and aiming perfectly into it with the other. Oh, yes, he had turned the stool upside down and was using it as a toilet. Realizing he doesn't know what he is doing I very calmly(well as calmly as you can when someone is peeing in your stool) say, "Ryan, that's not the toilet. Can you stop peeing?" No response. This is when I just start cracking up because, well, because he is PEEING IN THE STOOL! Realizing it was no use to try to get him to stop I go to get some rags to limit the damage. I throw a couple old towels in and under the stool to try to soak it up. Meanwhile I'm laughing so uncontrolably I'm snorting. Oh, yes, people. I snort laugh when I really get going which only makes me laugh harder. It's a vicious cycle I tell you.  Anyway, I was laughing and Ryan started looking confused and fussing a little bit. Inevidably when you choose a wooden stool as your liquid waste recepticle things get messy, so I changed his clothes and got him to bed.
As I cleaned up the mess while still laughing at the whole situation I realized something. I'm turning into my mother because I am going to have to tell this story. I will tell this story many times and each time I tell it  I will be cracking up before I get through the second sentence. I've started laughing several times just writing it here. I know sometimes I will just start laughing out loud because I thought about it. Yes, I am becoming my mother. Well, at least I'll be doing it with a smile.

Chaos

I have not been able to get into a groove this year. Try as I might things just seem to return to chaos. Maybe I'm trying to do too much, maybe I'm just not doing enough, but organization, energy and the feeling of knowing what's going on elude me. Everything in my house is "in transition." The basement is half painted, the boxes still surround the Christmas tree(which still dons it's lights), toys cover the floor, miscellaneous junk covers every flat surface in the house, the "art room" is still full of unsorted crafting and art supplies and has trash everywhere from Ryan's constant projects, etc, etc. Events keep sneaking up on me. Like GNO that has been on my calendar for about 6 months is tonight. The only reason I remembered is because someone asked me if I'm going last night. I did switch to a new calendar for the new year and forgot to transfer the date, but that just illustrates the problem. Things around here have just not been right. It seems like all Lily wants to do is play Wii, watch TV and play the computer. I don't let her do that all the time, but the requests every 5 minutes can drive a person crazy. I haven't gotten a good night's sleep in a long time. Lily keeps shouting in her sleep and/or waking up in the middle of the night and neither Jay nor I seem to be able to  go to bed at a reasonable hour. If I do go to bed I can't sleep. Then of course I'm tired all day. I need to do something to get this family back on track. I think part of the problem is all these breaks. I consider the breaks from school breaks for me and I really shouldn't. I've been working on figuring out a daily routine that will bring things to order, but it's really hard to maintain a schedule when I'm so stinkin' tired. Maybe the next step is writing down the schedule and keeping myself accountable.

Right now Lily desires a bath and I should go do that since she is asking for something without a screen and I should encourage that. Perhaps I'll share some more unorganized rambling with you later.

A Brave New World

So I've been hanging (online anyway) with some other aspiring photographers lately. I think it's been good for me. One of them put out a challenge today. The challenge was to declare yourself a photographer. That takes a lot of guts and confidence. I started a new blog to commemorate the occasion because I am a photographer! I'm still growing in my craft, but I am a photographer. For real! Stop laughing, oh wait, that's me. Maybe if I say it enough it won't be weird or feel like I'm bringing judgment down upon myself.
It's a new format for me and maybe for some of you. It's a lot more complicated than I'm used to, so hopefully it will improve over time. Let's call this it's "soft opening" for friends and family. Hopefully soon it will be ready for the world to see. The template is so cool. It changes the color of the background to enhance each picture. I'm not sure if I'll stick with that, but it sounds like fun for now.

Blah!

I've had this sinus infection for about a month. Mostly it was just annoying, but lately I had started feeling sick and tired, really tired. Probably because I have not gotten a solid night's sleep since Christmas for one reason or another. The one of the kids would call out, I'd get too hot or I'd just wake up and not be able to get back to sleep. So I made an appointment and got the antibiotics. I started taking the antibiotics and have felt terrible ever since. That's not the way it's supposed to work! I guess all that gunk that was trapped in my sinuses needs to go somewhere and that's what is causing the crappiness. It's no fun. In fact I felt so bad this morning that I tried that sinus cleaning rinse stuff the doctor gave me. It wasn't as bad as I thought. It was a little strange, but after I felt like I could breathe- for a while anyway. I'll probably do it again, but the trial pack I got only had 2 packs of solution, so I'm saving it for later. I bet you really wanted to hear about my no good day...in detail, didn't you? Well, you can blame it on the boredom. You can only surf the internet for so long before people start thinking you're stalking them. Plus no one updates that often. I'm so bored! There are a million things I need to do, but I can't even stand up long enough to make a sandwich without my head throbbing. I'm afraid my brain is too fried to write something meaningful to someone. So internet, that is why I'm here. That is also why I have not done my 2nd and 3rd day of the 365 day photography challenge. Perhaps I'll start over when I'm feeling better.

Football on the Brain

Ryan LOVES football. He watches the Ravens game every week. He's starting to understand parts of the game, too. This morning he asked me if I wanted the Dolphins to beat the Steelers. I said I wanted whatever teams need to win for the Ravens to get in the playoffs to win and the ones who need to lose for the Ravens to get in the playoffs to lose. Then he asked me who the Colts were playing. I told him I'm not even sure who the Ravens are playing he laughed and said, "Yes you do! Their playing the Oakland Raiders." I can't tell if he was completely shocked that someone wouldn't know the Ravens' schedule or if he just thinks I know everything he knows. I guess I had heard it in passing this morning, but it didn't matter that much to me, so I didn't retain it. Ryan however remembers every fact he's ever heard about the Ravens. He can probably tell you the score of every games this season.
Just a minute ago he dropped a game on the floor and Jay told him not to go around throwing stuff on the floor. He said, "Daaaaaaad, it was like when Derrick Mason dropped the ball!" Not, "It was an accident" or "I didn't mean to!" Nope, "It was like when Derrick Mason dropped the ball."

****Please note these things are all from my memory. If any of them are incorrect I'm sure I remembered incorrectly. Ryan would be very upset if you believed he messed up Ravens facts. I accept full responsibility for any misquotes or inaccurate football scheduling information.****
